80 The Strand – Shellmex House
The site
A long-standing blue chip client were seeking a new office space in the West End of London and settled on taking a floor of the Grade II Listed Shellmex House, which has recently undergone a whole building CAT A refurbishment. Presented with a blank canvas, we collaborated with the client from the outset to compose a design that provides a modern, functional space that attracts staff to commute to the office in the post-COVID working world.
fit out
TFI redesigned and modified the open plan mechanical arrangement to suit the alterations made to the floorplate, designed and installed a whole floor electrical arrangement, as well as installing new WCs to increase the low numbers provided by the landlord. A fully functioning client and staff entertainment lounge and acoustically perfect conference room were among some of the key highlights of the scheme.
The Challenges
Whilst the building had recently undergone refurbishment, TFI had to work within very tight parameters due to the building’s listed status; having to take particular care with all fixings to the hollow-pot slab, around the original columns and windows, all whilst consistently keeping a vigilant eye out for asbestos.
Logistical constraints were also an ongoing challenge, with tight site access to a single goods entrance with numerous other fit-outs being undertaken elsewhere in the building.
